On an electric scooter, gyropod or hoverboard…
More and more small devices are appearing to help you get around town. Some of them, such as scooters, can be very handy for getting to public transport hubs or making long journeys on foot.
However, certain rules also apply to these modes of transport. In particular, it’s important to consider your speed when deciding where to stand on the street:
- if you are not travelling faster than a walking pace (i.e. 6 km/h), you are considered to be a pedestrian and must therefore follow the rules applicable to pedestrians
- if you are driving faster than the speed limit, you must follow the rules for cyclists and use the carriageway or cycle lane if there is one.
A few safety tips:
Always keep your speed under control;
Keep a safe distance from pedestrians;
Be predictable, make your intentions clear (e.g. hold out your arm to indicate that you are turning);
Be visible, ideally wearing reflective clothing and a helmet.
Once you have completed your journey, don’t forget to park your vehicle in a marked drop-zone for self-service vehicles.
Report badly parked vehicles
Is your vehicle permanently parked in the wrong place in your street? You can send us your complaint (ideally illustrated with a photo) via the https://fixmystreet.brussels/ platform. A team of inspectors from the local authority will then carry out on-the-spot checks and, if necessary, collect the offending vehicle. This collection is carried out on a weekly basis in problem areas and has been in force since December 2022, the date on which this regulation came into force.
