School Mobility

As well as improving road safety in the vicinity of schools, the local authority is encouraging schools and extra-curricular establishments to make a commitment to more active mobility.

Are you a school headmaster in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre? Here are some measures you can implement in your school:

  • A School Travel Plan (PDS), pre-diagnosis and 3-year action plan
  • Le Brevet du Piéton (pedestrian certificate) and Le Brevet du Cycliste (cyclist certificate)
  • Installation of bicycle parking areas/shelters (pupils, teachers) and bicycle racks (parents, visitors)
  • Pedestrian and cycle lanes for school activities (e.g. cycling to the swimming pool)
  • School streets
  • Various facilities to improve the safety of your pupils

The Buck-e project

In September 2021, the Buck-e project was launched in the municipal schools of Woluwe-Saint-Pierre. The aim is to encourage primary 5 and 6 pupils to cycle, walk or use public transport to get to school, by awarding them ‘bucks’. These bucks are points that each participating pupil earns for each journey made using one of the above-mentioned means of transport. These points have a monetary value (10 euro cents) and can be used in the local authority’s partner shops to buy an ice cream, cinema ticket or entry to the swimming pool. The aim is twofold: to support and reward virtuous behaviour in terms of mobility within the local authority, while at the same time giving a boost to the local economy.

The schools taking part are :

  • Chant d’Oiseau school;
  • Centre school
  • Joli-Bois and Joli-Bois Individualisé schools;
  • Stockel school (FR and NL).

The school street

Brussels has more and more ‘school streets’, i.e. a street that is temporarily closed to incoming motorised traffic for half an hour every day of the week during school term time, when classes start and finish. The street will then be reserved for soft modes of transport. No cars or mopeds will be allowed on the street. However, residents will be able to leave the street by car at low speed. An exception will also be made for people with reduced mobility, holders of an exemption card and emergency and public utility services. The main objectives are to improve road safety and air quality in the vicinity of schools.

Here are the school streets currently in place in Woluwe-Saint-Pierre:

  • Avenue des Éperviers (Chant d’Oiseau school) is closed Monday to Friday from 8am to 8.45am and from 3pm to 3.45pm except on Wednesdays from 11am to 12.20pm (and school holidays).
